(Meredith) – A loyal dog named Cathleen walked a total of 40 miles to find her previous owners, who made the difficult decision of giving her away.

Her story of love and dedication touched many hearts on social media, and hundreds of people submitted applications to adopt the 6-year-old Great Pyrenees mix -- including Alicia Fields, her new owner.

The 33-year-old read about Cathleen on Facebook and knew she had to welcome the pooch into her home located in Winnsboro, Texas.

Even though the dog lived 218 miles away in Seminole, Oklahoma, Fields said the distance could not get in the way.

"I don't know how to explain it," Fields told her local news station, KLTV. "I just felt the need to log on and fill out this application to get her, and she was three and a half hours away."

Cathleen's former owners moved to a new home earlier this month and decided they could no longer keep her for undisclosed reasons, KOCO reported.  Another family in the nearby town of Prague agreed to keep the dog until a local animal shelter could find her a new forever home.

Missing her previous owners, Cathleen walked 20 miles from Prague to Seminole in hopes of reuniting with them. The ambitious dog reportedly made the trip not once, but TWICE.

“Her heart wants to be with them,” the Seminole Humane Society wrote on its Facebook page, adding the family loved her “very much.”

Fields said she hopes the outpouring of love Cathleen will receive in her new home keeps her from feeling the need to ever walk away.

"We are all in love with her," Fields wrote on Facebook.
