Investigators are looking into what caused an early morning fire at a restaurant in Old Saybrook on Thursday.
The chief of the fire department said police officers were driving on on Boston Post Road around 1 a.m. when they saw smoke coming from Shakahari Indian Cuisine.
Firefighters were able to get the flames out in a few minutes once they arrived on the scene. There is some heat damage in the kitchen.
"We had to take a lot of ceiling out in the kitchen area where the hood vents go through just to make sure it did not get into the attic," Old Saybrook Fire chief Joe Johnson said. "I don't know how long they are going to be out of business doing renovations. It's up to them to see what has to be done when they get here."
Crews also also checked on the neighboring business, Himalaya Cafe, and said there is some heat damage.
The fire marshal is now investigating the cause.
It's not clear when the business will be able to reopen.
