HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

The Connecticut Senate wants to allow school districts to share resources to help students who've fled Puerto Rico because of hurricane damage.

Lawmakers have agreed to place the bill on their consent calendar, which is expected to be approved Friday night.

The bill allows two local and regional districts to enter into a memorandum of understanding, allowing them to work together on ways to accommodate the students.

Republican Sen. Len Suzio of Meriden says his community has received about 168 students from the island. While many do not speak English, he says the district has been able to work with them because it has enough staff fluent in Spanish.

Suzio says other districts that don't have diverse populations could take advantage of what a community like Meriden has to offer.
