(Meredith/WNCN/CNN) – Dentists in North Carolina are apologizing for an ad that features them wearing ethnic clothing and offering a “Free Whitening System.”

Dentists at Renaissance Dental Center in Raleigh, North Carolina said the advertisement was ignorant, but not mean-spirited.

“Honestly, there was no ill intent when we created the ad. The idea behind the ad was that a smile is universal and we all smile in the same language,” Dentist Jill Sonner told WNCN.

Sonner said they always try to create ads that might appeal to different patients. “We have a family dental practice,” she said. “And see all ages, all ethnicities.”

The ad caught criticism on social media, but Sonner is hoping it won’t undo years of hard work.

“We can just apologize and try to get the message across that it was never our intent to be offensive or insensitive at all,” she told WNCN. “We are definitely going to be more thoughtful and intentional when we do our future ads.”
