NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Jobs and economy are big issues in this year's election.

In New Haven on Tuesday, there was a slightly different take.

Candidates running for governor are being asked how they would support the arts.

The venue for Tuesday’s forum was appropriate as it’s also large enough to hold a good-sized crowd, which they're expecting.

Many art programs are struggling to survive financially.

The CT Arts Alliance wants to know where the candidates stand.

This political event was a bit of a difference.

When have you seen candidates from three different parties at one event?

Democrats Ned Lamont and Joe Ganim, Republicans Tim Herbst and David Stemerman, and Independent Oz Griebel all took part in the CT Arts Alliance forum.

Earlier in the day, Lamont visited the East Street Arts, a studio in New Haven, where those with disabilities are the creators.

Albert Vasseur is a skilled craftsman who works for East Street Arts.

“This is a scarf, so every year when winter comes you can put it around your neck,” said Vasseur.

This nonprofit is somewhat fortunate. They have a store where they sell their crafts and they also repair chairs, but private funding for the arts is tough to get.

"I need the business community to do more. We need folks to support the not for profits and have them help take the lead,” said Lamont.

"It is difficult because you want to engage the donors, show them what you do. Just getting them to take that time to listen to what we do and how they can help,” said Eric Ginnish of East Street Arts.

The forum in New Haven starts at 5 p.m. and goes until 6:30 p.m.

If you're not registered to vote you can do so online and at the DMV until August 9, or at your local registrar until noon August 13, which is the day before the primary.
