The day after announcing the theft of a computer that contains taxpayer information, the state released a Web site to address the matter.

A laptop was stolen from an employee's car in Long Island, according to the state Department of Revenue Services. Officials said the laptop contains Social Security numbers of more than 100,000 residents.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Ray Daudani reported that because of the security breach, one in every 15 Connecticut taxpayers is at risk of identity theft.

Officials said the computer is password-protected and access is unlikely by anyone without specialized knowledge.

"It's a nightmare for us because the last thing we have ever wanted was for individuals' information to get out there," said Sarah Kaufman of the Department of Revenue Services. "One of our primary tenets of this agency is making sure that we protect the sanctity of taxpayer information."

The department said that the laptop was stolen 11 days ago and that no one has yet complained of information being compromised.

"Of course there are some angry phone calls we've been getting from people -- how could we do this? They have every right to be angry," Kaufman said.

An online database is expected to be available on Thursday for taxpayers to check if their information was stored on the computer.
