Three years of fundraising and planning and two months of construction have yielded a new state-of-the-art dispatch center in Enfield.

At first glance, the center almost looks like something out of the Starship Enterprise, not the Enfield Police Department, Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Erika Arias said.

Four work identical stations are equipped with seven computer monitors hooked up to the computer-assisted dispatch system, radio system and the Connecticut On-Line Law Enforcement Communications Teleprocessing (COLLECT) System, which connects to the state Department of Motor Vehicles database and the FBI.

Four flat-screen monitors mounted on the walls keeps tabs on the building, the weather on Channel 3 and also on any prisoners in lock-up.

"The dispatchers, they're the lifeline. They take the initial call, they keep officers safe on the road," said Bob Chatterton, from the Enfield Police Department. "We needed to give them the best equipment we could."

The old dispatch center, which served for 17 years, is now used as a conference room. Police officials described it as small, crowded and not very user friendly.

"Having all the screens right in front of us, versus having some over here and some over here, it's just a lot more ergonomic to work with," said Ken Maltese, an Enfield police dispatcher.

With a push of a button, the entire workspace can move up or down so dispatchers can go from sitting to standing in seconds.

"Each has a personal environmental system where you get heat and flow of air and ventilation and work light," Chatterton said.

Police officials said they hope those benefits of comfort will help ease a long, tough and stressful job.

"In this kind of job, attitude makes all the difference in the world," Maltese said.

The police department plans to hold an open house next month.
