The department wants gently used clothing, especially winter jackets.Newington -- The fire department on Main Street is hosting a haunted house event From Thursday night until Saturday night.Middletown -- State police announced that thanks to a large monetary donation, they will be able to purchase a new arson investigation van for the office of the state fire marshal.Milford -- There are concerns over the infrastructure of schools which need $109 million worth of work. Officials said the top priority is making renovations to Jonathan Law and Joseph A. Foran High School.BETHANY -- An old airport hangar could soon be transformed into a community center thanks to $200,000 in state funding. Town officials said that there will be a vote on the project. If approved, the renovated space would include a kitchen, storage areas, restrooms and a meeting space.Naugatuck -- People headed to the Naugatuck Fire Station to support friends and families of Marrakech Group food drive. They're looking for non-perishable and canned food. Donations will be used in halfway houses across the state.Avon -- The Avon Old Farms School held a dedication ceremony on Friday for their solar electric array. They are the 9th school in Connecticut to join the "Green School Alliance" which looks to make schools use less energy.

TORRINGTON -- (Aug. 17) The Park and Recreation Department in Torrington said the bleachers at Fuessenich Park need to be replaced. With a cost of $40,000, the department is looking for help from the City Council. City Officials said they have no control over the independent department’s fund.DERBY -- (Aug. 3) Last November, the Board of Aldermen voted to lay off its supernumerary officers on the recommendation of the Board of Police Commissioners, but it recently voted to reinstate those seven positions.TORRINGTON -- (Aug. 3) The City Council was scheduled to vote Monday to allow the mayor to apply for a $385,000 Department of Economic and Community Development grant for sidewalk reconstruction from Main Street to Prospect Street.TORRINGTON -- (July 29) A California company has purchased the former Timken Co. on 59 Field St. It said it plans to take steps to draw in new tenants in the next few weeks.SEYMOUR -- (April 20) It's been more than a decade since the town first heard about state plans to build a fish bypass channel on the Tingue Dam to revive dying fisheries on the Naugatuck River. After years of inactivity, the project is in line to receive about $3 million in federal stimulus funds and another $2.2 million from the state.SEYMOUR -- (April 6) A traveling memorial of 5,000 U.S. flags honoring those Americans who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq will be on display at Seymour Congregational Church through April 19.

New Haven -- (Sept. 28) Southern Connecticut State University is taking a stand against violence against women. The school, along with nine other universities, will lead the "Connecticut Campus Coalition To End Violence Against Women".WATERFORD -- (Aug. 25) The restoration of the historic Lord and Burnham Greenhouse is underway in Waterford. The Department of Environmental Protection and Friends of Harkness Memorial State Park are working together on the project. The first phase of the restoration is scheduled to be completed in November. The greenhouse was built in 1908.NEW LONDON -- The city of New London has received a $45,000 grant to study cultural assets in downtown. The study will identify areas of the city that are historic, which could lead to improvements to the streetscapes an signage. The area targeted is a section of Bank Street.GROTON -- (Aug. 18) The Jabez Smith House is offering a taste of Groton’s past. The house offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like in Colonial times. The house was built by Jabez Smith in 1783. It’s a significant landmark because it is on the site of one of Groton’s earliest settlements. The house can be visited on the weekends, from 1 to 5 p.m.NEW LONDON -- (Aug. 13) A New London music store is celebrating 80 years in business. Caruso’s Music has spent nearly 50 of those years at its location on State Street. Caruso’s has offered many services in its long history, including a music school, equipment sales, piano sales and commercial sound system installation.NEW HAVEN -- (Aug. 12) Kerin Boutique, an eco-conscious woman's store that sells clothing and accessories, is moving into the property at York and Elm streets in the fall in the Broadway retail district.

NEW LONDON -- (Oct. 19) The Coast Guard "Barge" Eagle Ship is hosting its annual "Haunted Eagle" In October. The event will take place Oct. 29 and Oct 30. It is free to the public. They are also looking for canned food donations. All of the donated food will be donated to a local food bank.NORWICH -- (Aug. 19) A blood donor recognition breakfast took place Wednesday at William Backus Hospital in Norwich. The breakfast honored hospital employees who have given at least 1 gallon of blood at American Red Cross blood drives. One of the keynote speakers at the breakfast was Channel 3’s own Kevin Hogan.MONTVILLE -- (Aug. 19) A former Beit Brothers store in Montville is now home to a tri-town grocery store. The store now has locations in Uncasville, Portland, East Lyme and Ledyard. Beit Brothers, which as a family-owned supermarket, closed late last year.BROOKLYN -- (Aug. 18) Town officials are questioning whether to tear down an old recreation building in Brooklyn. The building is on Prince Hill Road and has been empty for more than a year. The building has water damage, collapsed ceilings and termite and rodent damage. If torn down, it will only cost the town $10,000. Town officials said renovation would cost at least 10 times that amount.
