Central Connecticut

MERIDEN -- (Feb. 2) In Meriden, a police substation on Caitlin Street hopes to bring positive change to the town. The department wants to bring economic development in their former building on East Main Street. There is a prospective tenant for the ast Main Street location and the substation is expected to be completed soon.

ROCKY HILL -- (Feb. 1) In Rocky Hill, Monday marked the first day to order daffodils to benefit cancer patients and to raise awareness. It's all for the "50 Days of Daffodils" by the American Cancer Society, which runs until March 22.

SOUTH WINDSOR -- (Jan. 26) Plans to expand the Charles N. Enes Community Center are moving forward. The building commission is completing drawings for a proposal to add 10,000 square-feet to the senior center before it goes to the town council for a final review.

VERNON -- (Jan. 26) The town council in Vernon agreed to ask the town's traffic authority to determine if Maple Street should be a one-way road.

MANCHESTER -- (Jan. 26) Manchester Memorial Hospital's clinical quality ranks among the top 5 percent in the nation according to a new study by Health Grades, the leading independent health care ratings organization.

GLASTONBURY -- (Jan. 22) Asbestos is being removed at the former Arbor Acres chicken breeding facility. The buildings there have been vacant since the town bought the property last year.

Western Connecticut

NEW HAVEN -- (Dec. 14) Mayor John DeStefano and other local leaders were on hand at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new local census office.

MILFORD -- (Dec. 14) City officials in Milford are moving ahead with improvements to a local underpass. The state project will relieve the flooding problem at the "Old Gate Lane" underpass which has been stalled for years.

TORRINGTON -- (Dec. 14) Federal funding may soon be on the way to the city of Torrington to upgrade communications equipment used by first responders. A bill heading to the U.S. Senate would give the city $850,000 for the upgrades. The upgrade will improve response times and increase public safety.

TORRINGTON -- (Aug. 17) The Park and Recreation Department in Torrington said the bleachers at Fuessenich Park need to be replaced. With a cost of $40,000, the department is looking for help from the City Council. City Officials said they have no control over the independent department’s fund.

DERBY -- (Aug. 3) Last November, the Board of Aldermen voted to lay off its supernumerary officers on the recommendation of the Board of Police Commissioners, but it recently voted to reinstate those seven positions.

TORRINGTON -- (Aug. 3) The City Council was scheduled to vote Monday to allow the mayor to apply for a $385,000 Department of Economic and Community Development grant for sidewalk reconstruction from Main Street to Prospect Street.

TORRINGTON -- (July 29) A California company has purchased the former Timken Co. on 59 Field St. It said it plans to take steps to draw in new tenants in the next few weeks.

SEYMOUR -- (April 20) It's been more than a decade since the town first heard about state plans to build a fish bypass channel on the Tingue Dam to revive dying fisheries on the Naugatuck River. After years of inactivity, the project is in line to receive about $3 million in federal stimulus funds and another $2.2 million from the state.

Connecticut Shoreline

MILFORD -- (Feb 2) The Milford Diner Restoration Project will soon begin. So far, $8,500 has been raised so far at just two fundraisers.

NEW HAVEN -- (Feb 1) The new home of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies was awarded for being green. The Kroon Hall was awarded the Leed Platinum Certification by the U.S. Green Building COuncil. The hall uses 81 percent less water, and 58 percent less energy than a comparable building.

STONINGTON -- (Dec. 23) Residents in Stonington will now have an easier time with recycling. The town began sending recyclables to a Willimantic facility that automatically sorts glass, paper, plastic and cans. Residents will no longer need to use separate bins.

New Haven -- (Sept. 28) Southern Connecticut State University is taking a stand against violence against women. The school, along with nine other universities, will lead the "Connecticut Campus Coalition To End Violence Against Women".

Eastern Connecticut

NEW LONDON -- (Jan. 22) $100,000 in grants will go toward continuing renovations to a house at Connecticut College. The Steel House was constructed in 1933 for the founding director of New London's Lyman Allyn Art Museum.

NORWICH -- (Dec. 23) The Tommy Toy Fund charity in Norwich is in need of more toy donations before Christmas. Requests for toys are expected to exceed $8,000 this year. Anyone looking to donate can bring an unwrapped toy to the Norwichtown Mall on Town Street.

COLCHESTER -- (Dec. 14) Restoration work at the old firehouse in the historic section of Colchester will soon be complete. The building, dating back to 1855, has been home to the town’s first library, a Western Union office and a jail.
