Route 82 was closed in both directions on Monday morning because of bridge work after an electronic signal to the bridge operator failed to indicate it was safe for drivers to proceed.

The East Haddam Swing Bridge opens for tall water vessels going up and down the Connecticut River. It's the only bridge that crosses from Old Saybrook to Middletown.

"Every time the safety signal fails, the Department of Transportation sends out engineers to inspect the problem," said DOT employee Kevin Nursick. "That takes time."

DOT employees said the swing bridge is really in good shape, but an electro-mechanical problem needs to be resolved.

All lanes were closed while crews made emergency repairs, they said.

Police said the bridge has since reopened.
