Hanna Wreaks Havoc On Conn. Roadways

Manhole Covers Blew Off Storm Drains, Police Say

When pressure builds up in storm drain pipes and they can no longer hold water, the manhole covers can be ejected from their spots -- which can be a serious hazard for drivers.

Drivers in Waterbury learned this firsthand Saturday when the torrential rain brought by Tropical Storm Hanna wreaked havoc on several storm drains in town, police said.

Wind from the storm also brought down trees. Police said a tree toppled into the intersection of Hailey Ridge and Burton Road in Beacon Falls.

State Police reported that Route 8 South was also blocked by fallen trees in Derby.

Danbury fire officials also reported trees decimated by the storm. They said a tree had fallen over on Route 7 South, shutting down the road.

Fire officials said they also had to close parts of Main, White and West streets, as well as Hospital Avenue.

More downed trees were reported in Colchester. Police reported trees down on Route 149 by Peck Lane, causing them to close the road.

More trees were reported down on Waterman Road in Lebanon by Connecticut State Police Troop K.

Further, Stonington police reported two branches that had fallen onto Route 1, causing problems for drivers.

Fairfield police said a tree fell on the Westport Turnpike, causing backups.

Flooding also became an issue as rain pounded down. Fairfield police also reported flooding under nearly all the underpasses on Post Road.

Troop I reported flooding on Route 63 in front of the barracks.

Connecticut State Police Troop G reported flooding at the exit 25 off-ramp off Interstate 95, causing them to close the road.

Bridgeport police also reported that Fairfield Avenue had to be closed at Commerce Drive due to damage caused by the wild weather. They said State Street and Iranistan Avenue also had to be closed.
