Shoreline Officials Get Hurricane Ready

Hurricane Season Kicked Off June 1

Police, fire, medical and school officials from several shoreline towns participated in the Hurricane Ready '09 planning program on Thursday.

"We just have to wait and see and take things as they come," longtime Milford resident Bob Dennis said about hurricane season, which started June 1.

Dennis said he's seen his share of rough weather on the Connecticut shoreline, but that he knows the city is on the job.

"We have an emergency announcement system," he said. "They have a horn that goes off to notify the people, and then they call our homes and tell us when there's a problem coming, so they are well-prepared."

The goal of Hurricane Ready '09 -- in which police, fire, medical and school officials from Milford, West Haven, Stratford, Orange, Woodbridge and Bethany took part -- is to make sure all plans are in place in the event that a hurricane makes its way up the coast.

"We're going to look at how we evacuate people from the shoreline if need be," Milford fire Capt. Christopher Zak said. "We're going to look at how we get them information, where to go, how to go before the storm, during the storm and after the storm. We're looking at logistical concerns, how do we feed these people?"

"How would we handle our patients?" asked Alan Lynn, of Milford Hospital. "This is all part of what you would do in an emergency of this size."

But even with all the planning, Dennis said he hopes hurricane season comes and goes without a problem.
