WETHERSFIELD, Conn. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency was in Wethersfield on Tuesday to determine if any federal money will be used to aid the town in recovering from the tornado that touched down last week.Town officials have estimated the damage at about $500,000. They said 70 homes were severely damaged by the tornado and that three of them may have to be torn down.Resident Claudia Dondzik is the owner of one of the homes damaged by the storm. She said she's planning to contact her insurance company in an effort to help with the cost of repairs."It's really kind of tough, letting everything sink in on what happened," she said.In addition, officials said, the trees and power lines that were in the path of the tornado were uprooted and destroyed."This is typically what you'd see up and down a street after big tornado or hurricane," FEMA representative Fred van der Schmidt said.Wethersfield's mayor declared the town a disaster area on Saturday, and on Monday evening, the town approved using $100,000 to help with the cleanup.FEMA and Homeland Security officials also toured Farmington on Tuesday."In a world of disaster, this is bad," van der Schmidt said. "For the people who live here, it's a complete loss."Town officials said FEMA and Homeland Security officials were collecting data to determine if the federal government will chip in to pay for the town's recovery. But officials said it's still too early to tell when or how much money the will be supplied."For public assistance, the roads, bridges and public infrastructure dollar threshold based on populations … has to be met, and right now, town is collecting information to determine if it's close to that threshold," van der Schmidt said.
