NORTH HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - A tow truck driver was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 91 in North Haven over the weekend.

State police identified the victim as 38-year-old Christopher Russell of Ellington.

Troopers said a vehicle was disabled in the right shoulder of I-91 north just before exit 11 on Saturday night.

Around 6:20 p.m., the driver of a second vehicle struck Russell, who was in the right breakdown lane behind the disabled first vehicle.

State police said Russell was hit so hard that he struck the trunk and rear windshield of the first vehicle.

Troopers said he was pronounced dead on the scene as a result of the collision.

The driver of the second vehicle continued north on I-91 and hit a wire-rope guiderail along the median near exit 14. The driver was found unconscious and transported to MidState Medical Center for evaluation.

I-91 northbound was closed between exits 10 and 11 for the investigation.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to contact state police.
