EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - A man was shot multiple times and left in a street in East Hartford on Wednesday night.

Police identified the victim as 28-year-old Devonte Gardner of Waterbury.

A person of interest was identified, they confirmed.

Police believe he was visiting a friend in East Hartford when he was shot.

Police and firefighters said they responded to the deadly shooting in the area of Garden Street and Park Avenue around 8 p.m.

The area was blocked off at the time.

Residents called to report hearing several gun shots.

Upon arrival, officers found Gardner lying in the road.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The person of interest has not been identified.

Police said there were cameras in the neighborhood. They were looking at video to see if they could piece together what happened.

Eyewitness News spoke with many neighbors in the area. They did not want to go on camera, fearing for their safety. But they say the Garden Street and Park Avenue area is typically safe and quiet.

They were shocked when they heard multiple gunshots, and some saw the victim’s body lying in the road.

Police said there was no immediate threat to the neighborhood.
