WINCHESTER, CT (WFSB) – Two people died and two others were hurt in a head-on collision on Route 44 in Winchester.

One of the people who died was identified as 84-year-old William O’Leary of Plymouth.

The second person was only identified as a 16-year-old boy from New Hartford. His name was not released at the request of his family.

According to the Winchester Police Department, the crash occurred around 7:32 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police said the crash happened in an area commonly known as “rock cuts.”

They said the preliminary investigation suggested that a white-colored 2021 Lexus NX300 operated by Glen Ragin Jr., 23, of Torrington, CT and his front seat passenger Emanuell Caban, 18, of Waterbury, CT drove in an easterly direction on Route 44 when it passed a box truck that was headed in the same direction. In the process, Ragin crossed over into the westbound lane and collided into a vehicle driven by O’Leary, which was a 2022 Chevy Equinox.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. They will be examined by investigators for any mechanical defects. Other evidence will be collected as well.

Caban sustained numerous injuries including a fractured femur and was treated at Hartford Hospital. The status of Ragin was not available; however, he was believed to have sustained minor injuries.

The collision remained under investigation on Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision was asked to contact the Winchester Police Department at 860-379-2721.
