East Granby schools closed on Friday after a student found drugs
EAST GRANBY, CT (WFSB) - East Granby Public Schools were closed on Friday after a student was unknowingly in possession of drugs on a school bus.
According to state police, the child was found to be in possession of a suspicious package on Thursday.
“Responding troopers examined the package, and determined it to be suspected narcotics, believed to be picked up by the juvenile while riding on a school bus,” troopers said in a news release. “The initial investigation suggests that the student was unaware of the contents of the package.”
School officials said in a letter to the community that the contents of the package were tested, and the results came back as cocaine and fentanyl.
“I cringe thinking about it. It’s crazy,” said Matt Leone, Tolland.
State police said the origin of the package remained unknown as of Friday morning.
“It’s really concerning that this would be happening in a small town, that it was found by elementary school kids,” said Ashley Alexander, East Granby parent.
It is not clear how the drugs got onto the bus, but parents said the buses are shared between the high school, middle school, and elementary school.
“Follow-up investigation is anticipated to continue throughout the day,” troopers said. “This is all of the information available for release at this time.”
School officials entered “no transportation” as the description in Channel 3′s school closings system on Friday morning.
No other details were released.
Channel 3 reached out to both the superintendent’s office and the town’s emergency management director for more information.
