(Meredith) -- A New York man is accused of pushing his landlord down a flight of stairs, which led to the death of the 71-year-old, police say.

According to WABC, the incident began when 22-year-old Alex Garces, the tenant, was late on paying rent for a month. Edgar Moncayo, the landlord, went to collect Garces' payment, but an argument ensued.

During the argument, investigators say Garces pushed Moncayo. Moncayo was found at the bottom of the staircase, unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Garces is facing manslaughter charges.
