(Meredith) -- During the longest government shutdown in U.S. History, popular crowdfunding website GoFundMe has launched its own campaign to help federal employees impacted by the partial shutdown.
According to multiple news sources including The Hill, CEO Rob Solomon announced the newly launched fund on Saturday. Solomon released a statement explaining where the donations will be distributed across the country. Several nonprofit organizations will receive funding to help support government workers with housing relief, food, and counseling.
"Government workers, through no fault of their own, can’t afford to put diapers on their newborns," Solomon stated in the release.
Furloughed government employees created more than 1,500 GoFundMe pages to raise money for living expenses.
The government shutdown began on Dec. 22 2018, after Democratic and Republican lawkmakers failed to agree on a new Congressional spending bill.
Nearly 800,000 federal workers have been impacted, either furloughed or working without pay.
