Arrest made in Colt crest theft in Hartford

Rafael Sanchez was charged with stealing an historic bronze crest from the Samuel Colt Monument in Hartford. (Hartford Police Department)

A 62-year-old man was arrested after police said he was responsible for stealing an historic bronze crest from the Samuel Colt Monument in Hartford and taking it to a metal recycling center.

Rafael Sanchez was charged with larceny and criminal mischief in last week's theft.

The stolen bronze crest was found in more than two dozen pieces. It had been sold to a metal shop for less than $50.

It will cost about $300,000 to fix it. It's so expensive because it's bronze and they'll need to make it look like the original.
