Babysitter arrested after child found riding tricycle alone in Willimantic

Maria Torres (Willimantic Police)

A woman has been arrested after a child she was babysitting was found riding his tricycle alone outside on Monday morning.

Willimantic police said the 2-year-old child was found on Gem Drive at about 8:45 a.m. The little boy was not injured and was found by neighbor in the area, who flagged down a passing Willimantic police officer.

The babysitter, identified as Maria Torres, arrived at police headquarters about 40 minutes after she realized that the boy left the home when she was in the shower.

She was released on a $1,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Sept. 8.

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families was notified and will be investigating.

The child was reunited with his mother.

Torres was charged with risk of injury to a minor.

“We are pleased that this incident ended in the manner in which it did. Society expects and demands that we safeguard our children, and that was not being done this morning,” Corporal Stanley Parizo, Jr. said.
