The town of Barkhamsted issued a plea this week to anyone who knows who defaced a scene spot at one of its popular hiking spots.

The town posted to its Facebook page that someone plastered Beach Rock with Pokemon-related graffiti.

"This is disgraceful, immature and illegal," the town wrote. "The defacing of tranquil Beach Rock is unacceptable."

The town said it notified the MDC, which will handle the cleanup. On Tuesday, MDC crews surveyed the area and vandalism.

"MDC forces are in the process of examining alternatives for cleanup of the graffiti on Beach Rock in Barkhamsted, considering potential safety and environmental issues," MDC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Facebook post has been shared hundreds of times.

"We value nature out here," Barkhamsted First Selectman Don Stein said. "We want to protect it and we want to make sure other people have the opportunity to enjoy it."

Beach Rock is a popular spot in town with breathtaking views of the Barkhamsted Reservoir. That's why people hiking in the area on Tuesday said they couldn't understand why anyone would graffiti Beach Rock.

'It's definitely disappointing and it kind of ruins it a little bit," hiker Emma Cunningham, of New Hartford, said.

"It's such a beautiful spot and just the irreverence that was shown by vandalizing this is kind of disappointing," hiker Drew Anderson, of North Carolina, said.

Town leaders said they feel the same way and were surprised at the disrespect of nature. They called the vandalism unacceptable.

"It's a shame when someone feels that a Pokemon painting is more valuable than looking at the natural beauty," Stein said.

At this point, there's no word on when MDC will be cleaning up the vandalism.

Anyone who knows who's responsible for vandalism is asked to call state police at 860-626-1820.
