A young boy from Connecticut got the surprise of a lifetime from half a world away.

Plymouth resident Brock Sanford, 17, sent a portrait he drew of the Dalai Lama along with a letter to India back in June.

Sanford said he really believes in the Dalai Lama's teachings.

Then a couple days ago, he received an envelope in the mail and inside was Sanford's drawing, which the Dalai Lama had signed.

"I want to put out a little motivation to people -- to not be afraid of taking chances and stuff,” Sanford said. “Cause I obviously put a lot of work into this and it was a big risk of it just like getting lost or whatever but like the reward is worth it if you take the chance."

Sanford goes to Waterbury Arts Magnet School and says he's been drawing since he was five.
