The head of a local health company announced he's taking a leave of absence after he was arrested for drunk driving.

Hartford police said Peter Karl, CEO of Eastern Connecticut Health Network, was arrested Saturday.

Karl was charged with failure to drive in a proper lane and operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence.

A spokesperson for the company said in a statement, "Eastern Connecticut Health Network CEO Peter Karl informed us of his recent arrest for driving while under the influence. At his request, effective immediately, Peter will be taking a short term leave of absence. We fully support his decision to take this time to address personal matters related to this issue. During his leave ECHN’s operations will be managed by its current leadership team. We do not anticipate that this issue will have any negative impact on ongoing operations or the pending transaction to be acquired by Prospect Medical Holdings."

Karl will appear in court on September 14.
