First Mormon temple opens in Farmington

The first Mormon temple in the Constitution State has opened its doors.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple is located on the corner of Route 4 and Melrose Drive in Farmington.

Temples are considered "Houses of the Lord," and are not used for Sunday services, but are for marriage, baptism, and other ceremonies.

"The location of this temple here in Farmington is beautiful. The area is steepled in not only colonial history, but has ties to the history of the church as well. The fourth president of the church was born down the street from here in 1807 and became a tremendous leader in the church,” said Lyn Greenwood, assistant director of Hartford Temple Multi-stake Public Affairs.

The temple will be formally dedicated in November.

The temple is open for tours on select days starting Friday through October 22.
