A former New London police officer was found dead inside a vehicle on Monday afternoon.
State police said they responded to a commuter lot off of exit 24 on Interstate 395 around 4:30 p.m.
There, troopers said they found 35-year-old Russell MacDonald of Jewett City. He was unresponsive.
Captain Brian Wright of the New London Police Department confirmed to Eyewitness News on Tuesday that MacDonald was a former officer.
Mayor Michael Passero issued a statement.
"It is with a sense of sadness to learn of the untimely death of former New London Police Officer Russell MacDonald," he said. "During this difficult period, the city wishes to expresses our condolences and thoughts to Mr. MacDonald’s family."
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene to help with the investigation. It said it would conduct a post-mortem examination to figure out the cause of death.
However, state police said no foul play is suspected and there is no criminal aspect to the case.
They also said there is no threat to the public.
New London police have not yet released a comment about MacDonald's passing.
