A Hartford firefighter was charged with driving under the influence after a crash in Fairfield earlier this month.
Officers responded to report of a head-on crash around 2 p.m. on Sept. 9 on or near Somerset Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle collided with a tree and 29-year-old Harry Barrett inside the vehicle.
Police said they were suspicious of him being under the influence of narcotics. Then, Barrett subsequently failed a field sobriety test, police added.
A canine did indicate the presence of a narcotic odor coming from inside the vehicle, according to police, as well as two syringes that were flung from the vehicle during the crash.
On Sept. 13, police issued a search and seizure of Barrett’s medical records at Bridgeport Hospital on the day of the collision and found he did test positive for multiple narcotics.
Barrett is next due in court on Oct. 18.
The Hartford Fire Department said Barrett was on administration leave without pay. There is an internal investigation into the allegations against Barrett. It is unclear when the internal investigation will be finished.
