A man wanted for deportation ran into the road and was hit by a driver on Friday morning.
After further investigation by Danbury police, they learned Samuel Coctecon Cruz was wanted for a deportation warrant and fled from ICE agents in front of the Superior Court House.
A Danbury officer in an unmarked car witnessed the disturbance in front of the courthouse.
Cruz continued to flee the scene after being struck by the car.
The driver who struck Cruz was left with minor injuries from the crash.
ACLU-CT released a statement about the incident saying, "ICE agents jeopardized this man’s life and public safety by chasing him into the street, and they undermined public safety and justice by using the Danbury Courthouse as a hunting ground for deportation. The Trump administration’s vicious practice of picking up immigrants at courthouses is dangerous and unjust. It threatens public safety and subverts justice by making it harder for Connecticut residents to exercise their constitutional rights to access protection, call witnesses, offer testimony, settle custody matters, and seek redress.”
Cruz was apprehended by ICE agents and brought to Danbury Hospital for treatment.
The Danbury Police accident investigator issued Cruz an infraction for reckless use of the highway by a pedestrian.
