Train riders should be prepared to pay a little more for Metro-North fares.

Beginning Thursday, fares increase 6 percent, including a previously approved 1 percent increase.

That means a trip to Grand Central is $46.50, up from $44.

“As we looked to meet our budget requirements, our primary goal was to maintain all existing bus and rail service statewide for the thousands of people who depend on them every day,” said James Redeker, commissioner, Department of Transportation. “Combined with other steps to reduce expenses, this fare increase allows us to meet that goal.”

Signs have been placed around Union Station in New Haven to alert riders.

Many of them told Eyewitness News that they weren't thrilled about it.

The rail increase applies to the New Haven, Waterbury, Danbury and New Canaan branches as well as Shoreline East for tickets purchased for travel to or from stations in Connecticut.

"I feel bad for the people who commute everyday because they're the ones who have to deal with the hike," said Hope Case who was traveling to New York City.

In addition to the fare increase, a discount on "Mail and Ride" tickets will be eliminated.

A discount on the combined monthly rail ticket and unlimited-ride MetroCard will be reduced from 4 percent to 2 percent beginning with the purchase of December tickets.

The state Department of Transportation said the increase will bring in $6 million in revenue.

However, commuters called the numbers vague and frustrating.

"You have no idea why, like what's being improved," said Gracemarie Welter, a commuter. "Is the service going to be any better? You just don't know."

CT Transit bus service will also see a fare increase of 25 cents each way. It starts on Sunday.
