A man was struck by a vehicle in New Britain on Sunday, the driver of which fled the scene.
Police said 55-year-old Luis Delgado was hit on Jubilee Street just after 11:40 a.m.
"He came down his driveway to pick up some broken glass left behind and a car struck him and drove away," said Jamie Delgado, the victim's daughter.
He originally went out to mow his lawn, according Jamie Delgado.
When he bent down to pick up the glass, he was hit so hard that he ended up in the neighbor's yard.
Police said the report first came in as a "man down."
The victim's wife said her husband came in for some water and the next thing she knew she was running outside in a panic.
"I was totally in shock. I asked him what happened and he kept saying 'I don't know'," Margaret Delgado said.
They later figured out that Luis Delgado had been struck.
Luis Delgado was transported to an area hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
"He's having couple pins, and screws out in the lower spine to fuse that so he can walk again," Jamie Delgado said.
Luis Delgado has not been able to move, but he spoke with his family.
The family told Eyewitness News that he doesn't remember what happened.
Jamie Delgado said her father does not look like himself.
"If you were to line him up with several people I wouldn't be able to pick out my father from them," she said. "He was so swollen. I've never seen anything like it and I can't imagine who would leave someone on the side of road, knowing what they did."
Police blocked off the road for hours following the incident.
The driver was believed to be driving a late 1980s or early 1990s Honda Civic-type sedan with a small wheel base. It would have damage to its front end, hood and windshield.
Police sought the public's help in identifying the driver.
Luis Delgado's family said they also hope the public can help track down the driver.
"I'm just hoping if anyone saw anything, knows anything [or saw] something suspicious, just mention this to the New Britain Police Department," Jamie Delgado said.
