Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed in New Haven Wednesday night.

According to police, officers were sent to the area of 38 Dorman St. at about 10 p.m.

Officers located the victim, later identified as 31-year-old Levern Bellamy of 38 Dorman St., in the rear yard. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives remained on the scene into Thursday morning to look for suspects and evidence.

There's no word yet if there are one or more people were involved.

A man with children who lives in a Dorman Street home said he was frightened for their safety.

"It's terrible, [we] just get a chance to see the crime going down in this area," said Ngola Santos, whose family lives on the street. "So to see something like this happen is kind of disappointing."

Dorman Street remains closed from Dixwell Avenue to Sherman Street.

Police said there is no suspect description at this time.

Anyone who witnessed the crime or may have information is asked to contact detectives at 203-946-6304.
