West Hartford police said they were called to a home on West Maxwell Drive on Thursday for a possible burglary attempt.

Police said a man went to the home, saying he worked for the water company. He asked the homeowner to run the water in the basement faucet.

When she called down to her grandson in the basement, the man quickly left the house, police said.

The suspect was also accompanied by another man who had distracted the woman's husband in the backyard.

"This guy was stalling me outside so his buddy could get into the house and do whatever he was going to try to do...over my dead body," said the homeowner, Frank Zazzaro.

As soon as the pair took off, Frank Zazzaro called the police.

"My wife was pretty well upset over this, so was I, and as far as I’m concerned, this guy was committing a felony," Zazzaro said.

Police said nothing was reported missing at this time.

The suspects were described as being about 5 feet 9 inches tall. One was wearing “work apparel” with no markings. It is unclear what the other was wearing.

Police were unable to locate the suspects.

A similar incident happened on Sept. 24, police said.

Officials with the Metropolitan District Commission urge all residents, especially those who are home during the day, to be alert for imposters by following these tips: MDC field employees wear clothing and drive vehicles clearly marked with the MDC logo. The MDC encourages customers to ask for identification from anyone who comes to their door. All MDC employees have photo identification badges and will gladly display them upon request. The policy is “No Identification - No Entry”. If someone comes to your door claiming to be from the water company and you do not have a previously scheduled appointment, do not allow access to your home until calling the MDC Command Center at 860-278-7850 ext 3600 to verify their identity. If you have any doubt about the individual’s identity or motives, or authenticity of their credentials, do not allow them entry into your home and call the police.Copyright 2016 WFSB (Meredith Corporation).
