Plantsville students celebrate veterans with breakfast

It was a big day for our military heroes in Plantsville on Thursday, thanks to some of their smallest supporters.

Five years ago, the students at Plantsville Elementary School welcomed five veterans for breakfast, and on Thursday they had more than 56 veterans for food, stories and singing.

It’s a tradition that has grown in numbers and meaning.

"I have students come up to me all the time and talk about how they want to be in the military when they grow up,” said Julia Thomas, who is a teacher at the school and a veteran.

She helps coordinate the event, giving students a chance to invite and honor family members and neighbors who proudly serve.

"Some of the reasons that we honor the veterans, to educate them about the military and them to understand that some things are sacred and people have fought for them and that freedom isn't free,” Thomas said.

"It's a full school partnership and commitment - every student is going to present to the veterans how special it is to be here and to thank them for their service and dedication,” said Principal Steve Bergin.

It was a day to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many, and a celebration of who they are and what they’ve done for all.

"I feel for my generation it's a lot different. You definitely feel a lot more love and a lot more respect and it's great,” said Robert Lalla, who is a teacher and a veteran.
