Monday's potential for record-breaking heat led to a decision from a number of districts to dismiss early for the day.

One of the districts that made the call ahead of time was Middletown.

A message was posted to the district's website.

It said Middletown high schoolers will follow a regular exam schedule on Monday.

The middle schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. and the elementary schools will get out at 2 p.m.

"With the classrooms expected to reach roughly about 95 degrees or even exceeding 100 degrees, we wanted to take special interest to keep our kids safe and make sure they have healthy learning conditions," said Middletown Superintendent of Schools Michael Conner.

He added that principals and staff know to keep everyone hydrated, as the conditions in the schools and classrooms could become hazardous.

"Hopefully, the worst point of the heat within the schools, our students will be out," Conner said.

Simsbury and Enfield schools also issued early dismissals.

Safety was the main concern and to keep students out of the classrooms during the hottest hours was the goal.

"Right now we have finals, so we have half days, so we have two tests, stay in your classroom the whole time. I mean the third floor is the worst because it's the hottest, but when your finals are on second or first, it's alright," said Catherine Sullivan, Simsbury High School junior.

In a message to students, families and staff, Enfield superintendent Christopher Drezek cited the latest forecast and excessive heat. He said the greatest concern was for buildings that did not have air conditioning.

At Enfield High School, senior exams will be periods three and seven on Monday. Underclassman exams will begin on Tuesday.

On hot days like Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended staying cool indoors, staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities and wearing appropriate clothing.
