An altercation outside of the 99 Restaurant in Groton led to one man shot and two suspect at large on Sunday.

"Preliminary indications are that there was some kind of exchange in the parking lot that resulted in gunfire," said Groton Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro.

The parking lot was roped off for hours as police are searched the nearby roads, including Long Hill Rd and Ronald Rd for the suspect. Police are also working alongside Amtrak investigators after indication that the suspects may have boarded a rail car.

The victim was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, but was then transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. His condition remains unknown at this time, police said.

According to police, it is believed that the shooting was targeted. Police told Eyewitness News that the shooting is unrelated to the restaurant, and the suspects never entered the restaurant.

The cause of the altercation is unknown to police, but Chief Fusaro is not ruling the possibility of a drug related incident.

Groton resident, Monica Allen, was on her way to go grocery shopping, when she said she noticed commotion in the parking lot.

"It's very frightening to see something so close to home in a restaurant you eat at on a nightly basis," said Allen.

The incident occurred shortly after 4:30pm, in the parking lot of the Long Hill Rd establishment. Staff members called 911, and subsequently closed the restaurant.

"Investigators will continue working throughout the night and hopefully we'll be able to get someone in custody," said Chief Fusaro.
