Police in Middletown made a disturbing discovery over the weekend.

Vandals knocked over 15 to 20 gravestones at St. John's Cemetery on Johnson Street in Middletown.

"My heart sank a little bit when I first heard about it,” said Father Michael Phillippino, of St. John’s Church.

He said the church was contacted about the possible vandalism on Saturday.

"You wonder sometimes what makes people do that, but I guess it’s part of our nature sometimes,” Phillippino said.

Ann Bou-Fakhreddeine's daily walk often takes her through St. John's Cemetery on Johnson Street in Middletown.

"It’s peaceful and beautiful,” she said, adding that regardless of how the headstones ended up in the condition they are now, she hopes someone will do right by those in their final resting place.

Phillippino said they are now assessing the damage to the headstones.

"I will have to contact the families that will be involved and it will be up to them to see if they can correct those stones,” Phillippino said.

He also has some advice for those responsible.

“You should take stock of what you're doing and show some respect for yourself and for other people's property and for our loved ones who have gone before us,” Phillippino said.

Anyone with information should contact Middletown police.
