Vernon schools out of power following car crash into pole

Vernon schools said they are out of power following a crash in Vernon on Friday afternoon, police said.

The one-car crash was reported on Vernon Avenue around 3 p.m. Police said it crashed in a utility pole.

Police said the pole is across the road, so Vernon Avenue is "expected to be closed for extended time."

The driver refused medical treatment.

The crash caused Vernon Center Middle and Center Road schools to lose power around 2 p.m. Students were safe in the building and were dismissed at their normal times.

However, school officials said there would be a "disruption in bus transportation services" for students Vernon Center Middle and Center Road schools because the closure of Vernon Avenue. Parents were advised to expect delays with students coming home.

The power is expected to be restored by 4 p.m., according to Eversource.

Police said emergency generators were activated at Vernon Center Middle School and were operating on Friday afternoon.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
