A volunteer firefighter from South Windsor jumped into action on Sunday morning when he saw a car had crashed into a tree off Route 15 in North Haven.

Fire officials said the crash happened at about 6:30 a.m., in the area of exit 63.

Before North Haven fire crews got to the scene, South Windsor Company 2 Firefighter Jared Pelletier stopped on the highway when he saw the car was on fire.

He, along with a few others, was able to rescue the driver who was trapped inside. A passenger had already gotten out of the car.

North Haven officials said the driver was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for serious injuries. The passenger suffered minor injuries.

“We’re extremely grateful to the volunteer firefighter who stopped to assist with this serious car crash,” Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said in a press release. “His quick actions saved a person’s life. I commend his actions and the work by North Haven firefighters this morning.”

In a Facebook post, South Windsor Fire Chief Kevin Cooney said the actions of Pelletier and others most likely saved the occupant from serious injuries or death.

"In speaking with Jared, he made it very clear that the positive results were from a team effort of not only himself, but the other passing motorists that stopped to help too," Cooney wrote.

The crash is under investigation by Connecticut State Police.
