A large bar fight led to four people being shot early Thursday morning.

Police said they responded to the area of East Main and Cherry Streets in Waterbury.

Just before 1 a.m., they said a large group of people appeared to be fighting in the area of 402 East Main St.

They said the crowd was mostly made of people who were at the nearby Illusions sports bar.

As officers approached, they said gunshots rang out. Four people were hit.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News off camera that they heard a number of pops, then saw the victims on the ground.

"The next thing I know my room lights up like a Christmas tree from all the flashers. When i came out i saw all the police cars," said an eyewitness.

All of the victims were transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.

Of the four people struck, police said one of them is in critical condition. The other three are in stable condition.

Waterbury police called the investigation "active."

"We're looking into the conditions at that bar and the historical data that's available at the bar. We'll be looking at it very closely over the next few days consulting with the state's attorney office," said Deputy Chief Fernando Spagnolo.

They said they'll release more information as it becomes available.
