Wethersfield principal accused of taking photos of girls resigns

John Bean (Hartford police)

A Wethersfield school principal accused of taking photos of little girls has resigned.

John Bean, the principal at Highcrest Elementary, was arrested in September, suspected of taking pictures of girls with his cell phone at the Walmart in Hartford.

Parents, past coworkers and much of the Wethersfield community said they were stunned when the highly regarded educator was apprehended by police.

They told Eyewitness News that Bean had a glistening reputation before the arrest. He won teacher of the year honors in South Windsor in 2004 and built a strong reputation among parents and school leaders in other towns where he worked, including Tolland.

Parents learned about his resignation on Wednesday via a letter from the school district.

He was charged with breach of peace and resisting arrest. He was placed on administrative leave following his arrest.
