A woman was killed and a teenager was seriously injured after being struck by a car on Route 44 in Pomfret.

State police identified the woman who died as Mildred Kovalus Garcia, 35, of Pomfret Center.

Xavier Cubi, 16, was identified as the teen who was hurt.

According to troopers, Garcia and Cubi were in the westbound travel lanes of Route 44 tending to their dog, which had just been struck by a separate vehicle.

A vehicle driven by 59-year-old Scot DeAngelo of Bristol collided with the two pedestrians.

The collision was reported around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, according to state police.

Both Garcia and Cubi were thrown further down the road as a result of the impact.

Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene. Cubi suffered serious head trauma.

DeAngelo and his passenger were not hurt.

Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications said Route 44 was closed near Route 97.

Troopers asked anyone with information to give them a call at 860-779-4900, extension 2052.
