(Meredith) -- A boy from the United Kingdom was killed after being hit by a bus on his way home from school on Monday.

According to the BBC, the incident happened around 4 p.m. in Monmouth. A spokeswoman from West Midlands Ambulance Service told BBC that the boy was confirmed dead at the scene.

"Sadly, nothing could be done to save him," the spokeswoman said. The roads were closed after the incident as police and ambulance crews tried to save the boy.

Officials say the driver, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

The age of the boy has not been released.
