Gauthier’s OT heroics lead Boston College men’s hockey to 5-4 win against UConn; Huskies host rematch vs. Eagles Sat. night
The Huskies mounted an impressive comeback, but Cutter Gauthier willed the Eagles to victory.
(WFSB) - The UConn men’s hockey team will look for payback when they host #4 Boston College in Storrs on Saturday.
The Eagles hosted the first game of the home-and-home series on Friday night; UConn mounted an impressive comeback, pulling ahead of Boston College after falling behind by two goals.
Suddenly, UConn led 4-3 going into the 3rd period in front of over 6,127 fans at Conte Forum.
It was possible thanks to three straight unanswered goals by UConn; Jr. forward Chase Bradley scored two straight, while graduate defenseman Jake Flynn added another.
But Eagles fans had no reason to worry; Moments later, sophomore forward Cutter Gauthier elevated his game to a new level.
The Philadelphia Flyers’ 2022 fifth-overall pick found the back of the net to tie the game in the third period.
The rollercoaster ride would continue, and both teams had chances to win the game before regulation time expired.
As the minutes ran down, a few pucks rang off the post, but no one could score.
Five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime play began shortly after that, and it was soon evident that Cutter Gauthier wasn’t done making his mark on Friday night’s game.
He buried his second straight goal, earning a 5-4 Eagles OT victory over the Huskies.
As a result, Boston College’s record improved to 8-2-1 overall (3-1-1 HEA), while UConn’s fell to 5-7-1 overall (3-4-0 HEA).
UConn is 7th in Hockey East before Saturday’s game. They’re tied with UMass Amherst for third place, and both teams have 9 points.
Despite their 7th-place ranking, the Huskies remain only four points behind first-place Boston University and Providence College.
Coach Cavanaugh’s squad will look to bounce back on Saturday night when the Eagles travel to Storrs for the final game of their home-and-home series.
The rematch will air at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ from the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs.
