UConn’s Stephon Castle ties Carmelo Anthony for most ‘Freshman of the Week’ awards

STORRS, CT (WFSB) - Stephon Castle has earned his way into some elite company with his latest Freshman of the Week award.

Castle tied Syracuse great Carmelo Anthony for all-time Freshman of the Week awards with 10.

That’s the most ever for the Big East Conference. Anthony set the record during the 2002-2003 season.

The conference announced the latest award on Monday.

It said Castle shined in UConn’s lone game of the week on Sunday, during which he tied his career-high with 21 points in a 91-61 win over Seton Hall. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. He also shot 9-of-12 from the field.

Overall this season Castle has averaged 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, all tops amongst Big East rookies.

UConn’s next game is Wednesday to take on No. 5 Marquette in Milwaukee.
