State Democrats make gains in the House; several Senate races too close to call

While there is a lot of focus on the presidential race, and the balance of power in Congress this Election Day, here at the state level, there are several races

(WFSB) – Connecticut’s state House of Representatives Democratic majority made gains on Tuesday.

At least five Republican seats were flipped.

Democrat Nick Menapace defeated incumbent Republican Holly Cheeseman of East Lyme.

In Waterford, Republican Kathleen McCarty lost her seat to Democrat Nick Gauthier.

Republicans did win back a House seat in Greenwich with Tina Courpas defeating Rep. Rachel Khanna.

Another close race was in Torrington where Representative Michelle Cook faced a strong challenge from Republican Joe Canino. The results in that race remained incomplete as of Wednesday at noon.

Democratic Rep. Chris Poulous of Southington was able to keep his seat.

Several state Senate races were too close to call on Wednesday afternoon.

Sen. Tony Hwang of Fairfield had a lead over Democrat Rob Blanchard; although, reports suggested Blanchard may have conceded to Hwang.

Democratic challenger Paul Honig was poised to unseat Sen. Lisa Seminara of Avon with 80 percent of precincts reporting.

Democrat Sen. Mae Flexer in Windham is in a very tight race with Chris Reddy.
