UConn Hockey falls to Penn State in overtime thriller

ALLENTOWN, PA (WFSB) - It’s not an exaggeration to say the UConn men’s hockey team’s showdown with Penn State in the Elite Eight was the biggest game in the history of the Huskies ice hockey program.

Despite this being the Huskies’ first ever trip to the NCAA tournament, they certainly didn’t play like it, all the way up to the final second. UConn’s dream of going to the Frozen Four for the first time, came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, in overtime to Penn State, 3-2.

After trading goals in the first and second periods, a scoreless third sent the Huskies and the Nittany Lions into a sudden death overtime period, with the score knotted up at two goals a piece.

UConn had several shots on goal late in the third period, and they kept Penn State on the ropes for most of overtime. However, they just couldn’t find a way to sneak one past Penn State goaltender Arsenii Sergeev, when it mattered most.

Sergeev is a familiar face to the Huskies because he played for UConn the past two seasons, before transferring to Penn State.

Even though the Huskies’ season ended an overtime goal short of making it to their first Frozen Four, there are still plenty of positives to take from a year filled with so many amazing moments.

UConn finished the season with an overall record of 23-12-4 and earned their first win of many, NCAA tournament wins.
