LITCHFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) - Boys and men are leading the charge to fight domestic violence in their community and they’re doing so by walking a mile in her shoes in Litchfield on Sunday morning.

The 8th annual walk a mile in her shoes raises money for the Susan B. Anthony project, a domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center, but its below the ankle where these walkers strut their stuff.

“A lot of the men are going to be wearing red four inch high heel stilettos,” noted Gina Devaux, Developing Director of the Susan B Anthony Project. “Sort of as a sign of solidarity with victims and survivors.”

It’s a pretty sore sight, but more than 100 other men here in Litchfield on Sunday will be sporting similar footwear. It’s a lighthearted way to bring up a pretty tough subject.

“It’s one of the most successful ways I’ve found to have the conversation because people tend to open up a lot more,” explained Devaux. “They see other people they know talking about. They realize it’s not just a women’s issue. They realize it’s not just something to be kept quiet.”

But as you could imagine, the morning has its share of laughs, too.

“We’re feeling good,” said Jacob Coleman. “Toes are a little crunched up, but not too bad.”

“Sinking into the grass but we’re doing good,” added Zach Sweeney.

This walk may be fashion first, but function is important as well.

These boys have to make it around the full mile loop.

“It’s going to be tough, but we’re here, got to get it done,” expressed Sweeney.

Beyond the antics, this not only raises funds but awareness for the work done by this small non-profit.

“100% free, everything we do, and 100% confidential,” noted Devaux. “And if anyone ever needs support, we’re right here.”
