Travelers Championship begins in one month

CROMWELL, Conn. (WFSB) - One month from today is the first round of the Travelers Championship.

Last year, the number one player in the world Scottie Scheffler won the championship.

Scheffler won his third major yesterday after winning the PGA Championship by five strokes.

He will be back this year and looking to repeat in Cromwell.

Last year, a protest disrupted the final twosome of Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler.

With security out to prevent that type of situation this year, tournament director Nathan Grube is excited about teeing off.

“Every year we take a look at the entire event from security to public safety. That’s always paramount for everyone. How are you going to take care of the sponsors? The players? We have a close working relationship with PGA tour security, Cromwell police and Travelers security team. I can say we are going to do what we do every year, and that’s try to get better with area of the event. Whether it’s the fan experience, volunteers, public safety, whatever it is,” Grube said.

The field will be comprised of the top 72 ranked golfers on the PGA’s list

Among those already committed to play are Ricky Fowler, Patrick Cantlay and crowd favorite Tony Finau.

Those three are all looking for a first time victory in Cromwell.

“So much is going well with ticket sales, we are ahead of pace in ticket sales. There is so much excitement about what we do for the communities and what we do for charity,” said Andy Bessette, Travelers Executive VP.

Right now, the course is getting into playing shape.

Crews are working on the preparations for the thousands and thousands of fans that will attend .

When you see the progress being made it builds excitement and energy.

“Especially when the weather changes, people are like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s happening!’ It’s a general excitement and adrenaline that carries you the last month,” Grube said.

June 19th is the first round of the event. The tournament celebration begins on June 17th.
