Will the Severe Thunderstorm Watch impact the Travelers Championship?

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) - The high temperatures and risk for storms caused new challenges at the Travelers Championship on Thursday.

The real concern on the course was the threat of thunder and possibly lightning.

The tournament has been evacuated in the past for heat, humidity, and lightning.

As of Thursday afternoon, there was a serious threat for a storm with strong winds and possibly lightning.

The PGA tour had their own meteorologist who kept a close eye on the situation.

Wade Stettner was laser focused on the area over the Travelers Championship.

Channel 3 asked Stettner if people should be concerned.

He replied, “We should because right now, much of Connecticut is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. So we are monitoring the radar this afternoon for any storms that pop up and any storms moving towards to TPC course.”

If the storm headed for the course, surrounding billboards were ready to alert the crowds. The goal was to give people at least 20 minutes notice.

If those alerts went up, people were instructed to leave the course and walk to their cars.

Attendees were also asked to avoid being under or a near a tent. If there were strong winds, the tents could blow away.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect until 9 p.m. on Thursday.
