Top golfers tee off on day 2 of the Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) - Friday marked the second day of play in the Travelers Championship in Cromwell.

In Friday’s action, top-ranked Scottie Scheffler looked to chase history.

Scheffler teed off at 10:35 a.m. He aimed to become the first back-to-back Travelers champion since Phil Mickelson did it more than two decades ago.

The world’s best golfers teed off Thursday for the opening round at the TPC River Highlands.

The leaderboard after round 1 featured the top two ranked players in the world and four major champions, which set a high bar for the second round.

One of Thursday’s standouts was Rory McIlroy, who carded a 66 and said the course evolved in challenging ways.

“I definitely think they have made a couple of holes a little tougher and make you think a little more,” McIlroy said. “Twelve and the second hole, moving the tee box over on the 9th hole. Yeah, you can definitely see that there are holes with more thought needed.”

Another standout performer was Austin Eckroat, who surged to the top with an 8-under-par 62. He credited a recent swing adjustment for his success.

“I’ve been having a left miss all season,” Eckroat said. “Over the last two weeks at home I have solved that and I wasn’t fearing the left ball today, which is huge. When you’re feeling comfortable, other things start to fall in line.”

Despite all the star power, the tournament continued without former Travelers champion Jordan Spieth. Spieth withdrew from the tournament because of a neck injury.

Thousands of fans were expected to return throughout the weekend.
